The Yankees have had a great offseason – nobody is questioning that. The acquisitions of Granderson, Vazquez, and many others were very good. The one thing that irked me was NOT grabbing Mark DeRosa. He ended up signing with San Francisco for $12 million over 2 years. A Guy who would hit .280 with 15 home runs for the Yankees while hitting 8th, playing multiple positions (as well as definitely plugging up left field), and being a great clubhouse guy would have only cost them $6 million per year?! Randy Winn was a decent signing at $2 million, but he won’t give them the production that DeRosa would have for only $4 million more. I guess the Yankees thought that 40 batting average points and some more power, as well as the ability to play anywhere on the field was not worth $4 million. DeRosa didn’t hit .280 last year, but he also didn’t have the lineup he would be playing with in the Bronx. He would have most likely hit 7th or 8th in that lineup, and with the talent surrounding him he would be almost a sure thing to hit .280, and would be sure to drive in a solid amount of runs – definitely more than Randy Winn. I can understand if the Yankees really did need to save the $4 million, and Winn is fine. I’m just saying, for another $4 million, we could have had a player who would be a great fit with this club.
