Rumor has it that the Yankees are going to try turning Kei Igawa into a lefty specialist. He did have a solid season in 2009 against left handed batters in AAA, but I’m still not buying it. Igawa has been a bust his entire major league career, and I don’t see how that it’s going to be any different now. It’s not like he was only given 15 innings to show what he could do either. In 2007 he posted a 6.25 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP over 67.2 innings. I could see the Yankees doing something to get some sort of value out of his contract, but I don’t think they should risk losing games while doing it. If he can be traded for anything, that is the way they should go. I mean ANYTHING, an extra groundskeeper may be more valuable than Igawa at this point.
The front office must be feeling pressure to make this signing somewhat useful, but throwing him out there will only hurt the club.
What do you think about the Yankees potentially putting Igawa in the bullpen?

Excellent idea to try Igawa in the bullpen, that is what spring training is for, to try different things isn’t it?
Spring training, yes… But I think they are thinking of this as a regular season move. They just wanna make some use of their money.
Maybe, but all I am saying is before we anoint Boone Logan as the second left hander in the bullpen with Marte, providing he is healthy, let’s at least try Igawa. Logan’s lifetime stats of 5-5 with a 5.78 ERA and 1 save in 5 attempts don’t exactly engender confidence.
