Randy Winn 2010 Projection

Time to have some fun. Over the next bunch of days I am going to be taking a look at one key Yankee per day… and I will try and predict their stats. I’m not just talking about saying things like “A-Rod is going to hit alot of home runs”, I am talking stats all the way down to plate appearances, doubles, triples, etc. (I didn’t want to get all the way down to sabermetrics and confuse everyone – myself included). So, without further ado, I give you my opinion and predictions for new outfielder, Randy Winn…

Alright, I know I bashed him in the beginning. If you read my first article about how we should have signed Mark DeRosa instead of Randy Winn (I still think we should have, by the way), you would think I’m not a fan of Winn. Well, I have come around a bit on Winn, realizing more and more the fact that he will probably be platooned out in left field with Marcus Thames. If Winn is only hitting against right handed pitchers, he will produce more efficient numbers. He’s no Mark DeRosa, but…

Plate Appearances: 396
At Bats: 371
Hits: 99
Walks + HBP: 25
Doubles: 19
Triples: 2
Home Runs: 7
Runs Batted In: 39
Runs Scored: 44
Stolen Bases: 2

Batting Average: .267
On Base Percentage: .313
Slugging Percentage: .385
On Base + Slugging: .699

After looking at the predictions, it’s clear that I believe he will be platooned most of the time out in left field. One might also think “Randy Winn hitting 7 home runs? Are we talking about career stats?” No, we are not talking about career stats. We are talking about a left handed hitter who can make contact, playing in the new homer dome that is called Yankee Stadium, and hitting in a lineup that will let him see plenty of good pitches to hit. 7 home runs may even be a bit modest. He hit two last year, and his power certainly is not increasing like a fine wine, but even he will be able to put a few baseballs into the seats in the Bronx.

Stay tuned for tomorrow morning when I take a look at Winn’s probable platoon-mate, Marcus Thames

If you have any thoughts on the predictions, say so in the comments section!

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
