Can Joe Girardi Please Use His Twitter Account?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB on 02 25th, 2010 | no responses

Okay, this post isn’t really as much about Girardi as it’s about Ozzie Guillen. Anybody who reads this – go to twitter.com/ozzieguillen. I am personally guaranteeing you that this will be one of the most entertaining Twitter accounts of all sports figures on there, if not all Twitter accounts out there. His second tweet ever? “what I saw on the field today was a lot of grass…” His third tweet? “3 day of Spring Training and im already boreddddddd”. The tweets to come will be nothing short of hilarious. Chicago GM Ken Williams has already chimed in on Guillen making a Twitter account, saying, “No comment … and make sure you write that it is a no comment with a head shake from side to side,” Ozzie being Ozzie, he doesn’t really see what the big deal is, “I guess I can’t have fun,” Guillen said. “I flunked in school five times, and I never had as much trouble as I’m having right now. Why do I have to explain to people why I’m doing this? Like I said, I talked to Kenny about it, it’s not anything that involves the club.”

My thoughts? Let Ozzie do what he wants! He’s one of the MLB’s most entertaining characters. Sure, if Girardi actually used his Twitter account all Yankee fans on there would love it and follow him and be interested in what he has to say (twitter.com/girardi_27… he has a whopping 3 tweets)… he has a whopping 3 tweets. But Girardi would never say “3 day of Spring Training and im already boreddddddd”. We would be getting tweets more to the tune of, “Great practice today by the team – excited to get back to work in the AM!” They would be dry and safe (i.e. boring). Aside from the fact that they would be fairly generic, Yankee fans would still be interested. However, if Girardi was to say something like, “If Swish runs up that wall one more time I’m going to lose it,” I wouldn’t be complaining (note that I love the Swisher right field wall run, but I’m sure the coaches don’t).

On the subject of professional sports coaches using Twitter, I think it’s a great idea. A handful already do as it really is a great way of staying in touch with fans, updating people about the team, and many more. Whether the tweets be more of the informative kind, or more of the fun kind, I think it’s a great idea for the coaches, and at the very least, it will help them gain some popularity with the fans (unless they say something really dumb).

Either way, I’m urging everyone to keep up to date on what Ozzie is saying. It’s gonna be a fun ride, and I want everyone to be a part of it.

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
