Priciest Spring Training Facilities

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB on 03 18th, 2010 | no responses

Tom Van Riper of Forbes.com recently wrote an article listing out the most expensive Spring Training stadiums in both Florida and Arizona. The compiled list only includes 10 spring training facilities. It should be noted that 7 of the top 10 are in Arizona. Despite the fact that the games played at these stadiums throughout March are somewhat meaningless, these stadiums are bringing in a substantial amount of revenue to the teams, as well as the surrounding community. According to the article, more than 3 million fans have been attending spring training annually in recent years, up from just over 1 million fans per year in the mid-1980s.

As Tom Van Riper writes:

A cottage industry was born–a cost center turned into a profit center. And local counties, many of which get a cut of ticket and parking revenue, as well as boosted tourism, were thrilled with the new cash flow. “It’s got a big effect on the tax base, plus a favorable effect on real estate values,” says Bernie Mullin of the Aspire Group, a sports industry consultant.

The stadiums listed below are the top 5 most expensive spring training facilities. Along with the stadium name is the cost, team(s) using the facilities, and state in which the stadium is located.  To read more on this article and see the rest of the list, click on the following link: Baseball’s Most Expensive Spring Training Palaces

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
