New Yankee Stadium Finally on Google Maps

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 29th, 2010 | 2 Comments
If you are as crazy a fan as I am and periodically check Google Maps to see if they FINALLY updated their maps to include satellite imagery of the new Yankee Stadium, then I am happy to inform you that the new Yankee Stadium can be seen on Google Maps by utilizing the brand-spanking new Google Maps Earth View to see maps in 3D. The new stadium can be seen standing adjacent to the old Yankee Stadium. If you cannot see this feature within the embedded map below, you may need to go to Google Maps to install the 3D plug-in. I know this seems like useless information, but I enjoy it! Hope you do...

Sabathia Loves The Birds

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Baltimore Orioles, NY Yankees on 04 29th, 2010 | No Comments
On Wednesday, C.C. Sabathia continued his dominance over the Orioles in the Yankees 8-3 win. Though slightly struggling with his command throughout the game, C.C. allowed three runs on 11 hits over 7 2/3 innings in Baltimore. In 15 career starts against the Orioles, Sabathia is 10-1 with a 2.62 ERA. This is by far the best record he has against any team in the American League East. This is good news for Yankees fans as Sabathia is slated to start against the Orioles again in his next start on Monday, May 3rd in the Bronx. The lone loss against the Orioles for Sabathia came on Opening Day in...

Bullpen Adding Fuel to the Fire?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 28th, 2010 | No Comments
We’re almost through the first month, and the Yankees sit in a better position through the first 19 games than they have in six years. That doesn’t mean they’re clear of weaknesses. While all of Yankee-land seems to understand that Mark Teixeira’s impact will soon be felt, and the hope is that Javy Vasquez will soon come around, the recent slide has uncovered bullpen problems. What’s the problem? The relievers just aren’t getting hitters out, especially in key situations. Brought out of the Bureau of Useless Statistics (BUS for short – my favorite place to hang on a weekday...

Former Minor League Pitcher of the Year Flirts with No-No

Posted by Brian Capozzi in SWB Yankees on 04 28th, 2010 | No Comments
Jason Hirsh of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees has had a rough two years. He has struggled with a variety of injuries and is working hard to become the pitcher that once earned him the Minor League Pitcher of the Year award. All the hard work showed yesterday as Hirsh took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Louisville. The no-hit bid ended with 2 outs in the eighth when Hirsh gave up a home run to Corky Miller. The Yankees won the game by a score of 2-1. After the game, Jason Hirsh was quoted as saying: “Tonight was just one of those nights when everything clicked. [Catcher...

Swisher Salutes (Week 3 – 4/19 to 4/25)

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 27th, 2010 | No Comments
Swisher Salutes You, Phil Hughes, for flirting with history in Oakland! You are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2010 season. He had to wait his turn, but so far Phil Hughes has made the most of being back in the starting rotation. At this rate he will soon take over the number four spot ahead of Javier Vasquez, who has struggled out of the gate. For Hughes, it’s taken a couple of years, but he seems to be as good, if not better than he was upon his original call-up to the big club in 2007. Two things have marked his good beginning to 2010. First of all,...

Will Derek Jeter get more hits than Pete Rose?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 26th, 2010 | 2 Comments
If you knew absolutely nothing about baseball, never watched a single game, and just so happened to turn on ESPN one night when the Yankees are playing on Sunday night baseball, you might just think to yourself, “who is this young guy playing shortstop for the New York Yankees?” It’s not surprising at all that Derek Jeter is off to one of the best starts in his career, but the shocker to many is the fact that he continues to perform at such a high level where it’s mind boggling that he will be turning 36 in June and should in the tail-end of his career. Don’t...

Nick Johnson’s Unusual Start

Posted by admin in NY Yankees on 04 26th, 2010 | No Comments
When the Yankees signed Nick Johnson back in December they expected him to get on base. A lot. He had been heralded as the “OBP Jesus”, amassing 487 walks in 760 games, good for a career .401 OBP. It seemed a little unusual at the time to sign a designated hitter who specializes in, well, not hitting the baseball, but a .400 OBP in front of Tex and A-Rod is bound to lead to tons of runs. In this regard, Johnson is off to a great start with a league leading 18 walks. However, there is something a bit suspect about a guy with a .382 OBP and only a .229 slugging percentage. Johnson...

Too Early To Give Up On Vazquez?

Posted by admin in NY Yankees on 04 26th, 2010 | No Comments
Responsible for half of the Yankees six losses, Javier Vazquez is off to a lousy start. His rate stats may be even worse than his record, as his 9.00 ERA and 1.80 WHIP are awfully hard to look at. He looks nothing like the 4th place NL Cy Young winner of 2009, and doesn’t seem to be headed in the right direction either. His last start was his worst yet, getting chased after just 3.2 innings and 5 earned runs. I expect him to get booed by the home crowd when he returns to Yankee Stadium on Saturday to face the White Sox. I’ve noticed very polarized responses to Javy’s...

Today’s Line-ups Yankees vs Angels (04/25/10)

Posted by Colin MacNeil in NY Yankees on 04 25th, 2010 | No Comments
After splitting the first 2 games in Anaheim, the Yankees are looking for their 6th straight series win. With Andy Pettitte’s stellar pitching performance and clutch hitting with runners in scoring position yesterday, the Yankees have a very good chance to achieve this. Pettitte went 8 inning giving up 6 hits and striking out 8 in an afternoon tilt.  Andy is 3-0 on th season with a 1.29 era. Javier Vazquez is looking to get his 2nd straight win today vs the Angels. After his last mediocre start vs the A’s, look for Vazquez to get back on par. New York Yankees: (12-5) Derek...

Weekend Pitching Matchups – Yankees at Angels

Posted by Colin MacNeil in NY Yankees on 04 23rd, 2010 | No Comments
The New York Yankees are getting set to do battle with one of their greatest foes — the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The last time these 2 teams met was on Opening Day, just over a week ago at the stadium in the Bronx. The Yankees took the three game series 2-1. With the pitching match-ups set for this weekend, looks like it’s going to be another great series. Friday RHP A.J. Burnett (2-0, 2.37) vs. RHP Ervin Santana (1-2, 4.35) Saturday LHP Andy Pettitte (2-0, 1.35) vs. RHP Joel Pineiro (2-1, 1.77) Sunday RHP Javier Vazquez (1-2, 8.27) vs. LHP Scott Kazmir (1-1,...

Yankees Turn Triple Play and Lose

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 22nd, 2010 | No Comments
It hasn’t happened since June 3, 1968, but in the sixth inning of the Yankees 4-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon, the Yankees turned their first triple play in more than 40 years. With runners at first and second Sabathia was working to Kurt Suzuki chopped a ground ball to Alex Rodriguez at third base. A-Rod fielded the ball quickly, raced to third base for the first out, turned and fired to Robinson Cano covering second base for the second out. Cano, with his quickness at the bag, fired a strike to Nick Johnson for the third out of the triple play. As reported on...

Today’s Line-ups Yankees vs A’s (04/22/10)

Posted by Colin MacNeil in NY Yankees on 04 22nd, 2010 | No Comments
What can we Yankee faithfuls say about Hughes start last night, except for BRILLIANT!!! Phil Hughes had the best outing of  his career last night. Hughes had 10 K’s and 1 hit thru 7 1/3 innings. The only hit he gave up was to Eric Chavez, who hit a liner back to Hughes, breaking up the no-hitter in bottom of the 8th. The last time Hughes had such an outing was back in May of 2007 when he was also pitching a no-no against the Texas Rangers, taking him into the 7th inning when the unthinkable happened… a hamstring injury. Also, Yankees skipper Joe Girardi announced yesterday that...

After West Coast, Yankees Head to… White House?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 22nd, 2010 | No Comments
After the Yankees complete their west coast swing against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Yanks make their way back to the east coast to play the Baltimore Orioles. But hold up, there is another stop! On Monday, April 26, the White House will host the New York Yankees as President Barack Obama squares off against C.C. Sabathia on the South Lawn. That would be a fun match-up to watch. But in all seriousness, the Yankees will be making good use of their day off to visit the White House for a congratulatory visit with President Obama. The read more on this White House visit, check the...

Now they sit in 1st place (10-3) by half a game over the Rays (10-4). With a win tonight or tomorrow the Yankees will have won their 4th series in a row. Keeping a Close Eye on Ex-Yankees

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 21st, 2010 | No Comments
As the 2010 season progresses, BronxBombersBeat.com will continue to keep a close eye on the ex-Yankees who were a part of the 2009 World Series Championship team, as well as the highly touted Austin Jackson as he plays in his first Major League season with the Detroit Tigers. If there is anyone else you would like for me to add to this list of players, please leave a note in the comments section and I will be sure to add them. Of the players listed below, it is quite obvious that Hideki Matsui has been the most productive as he is hitting above .300 with 3 home runs and 8 RBI for the Halos....

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
