Joe West Needs to Shut His Pie Hole and Go Away

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees on 04 10th, 2010 | no responses

In the words of Ryan Dunne in Summer Catch, “Get off your knees blue, your blowing the game!” I am sick and tired of hearing about Joe West’s remarks the other day in regards to the length of the Yankees-Red Sox games. I mean seriously… your JOB is to stand on a baseball field and umpire for 3-4 hours, with the OCCASIONAL 4+ hour game. Would Joe West rather work at a desk from 9-5? If so, I would be more than happy to teach him a thing or 2 about what I do. The guy has some nerve! If you aren’t aware of the situation, Joe West had the juevos to call the Yankees and Red Sox pathetic for the lengths of their games in the opening series earlier this week. I mean, he is partially right. The Red Sox are pathetic, but leave the Yanks out of this! Ha! All kidding aside, the comments he made were:

“It’s pathetic and embarrassing,” West told The Record of Hackensack, N.J., Wednesday “They take too long to play. They’re two of the best teams in baseball. Why are they playing the slowest?”

After this quote was published the next day, no voiced their opinion… that was until Mariano Rivera had something to say. He was quoted on Thursday in response to West’s rant:

“If he has places to go, let him do something else. What does he want us (the players) to do, swing at balls? … We don’t want to play four-hour games, but that’s what it takes. We respect and love the fans and do what we have to do, and that’s play our game.”

Mariano hit the nail on the head! It’s kind of hard to take criticism from Mariano seriously as he never really opens his mouth like this, but I am so glad he did! Perhaps others should follow in his footsteps and really let West have this. I will be extremely disappointed in MLB assigns West to another Yankees game this season… let along another Yankees/Red Sox series. Along with how inconsistent the umps strike zones were in the series, this is yet another reason as to why everyone ridicules umpires.

What are your thoughts on Joe West? Do you think he should umpire Yankees and or Yankees/Red Sox games going forward? Leave your thoughts below.

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
