Swisher Salutes (Week 7 – 5/17 to 5/23)

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 27th, 2010 | 2 Comments
Swisher Salutes you, Javy Vazquez, for finally showing up! No, I’m kidding…actually I’m not. You are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 7 of the 2010 season. I’d like to think this past week was a mere blip in the radar for the Yanks, so that’s what I’ll chalk it up to. The fact is this was by far the Bombers’ worst week of the season.  They won exactly zero of their three series’ (0-2-1), and that they tied the one series was a minor miracle. Alex Rodriguez is getting his hits, but other than his mammoth homer off of Papelbon last Monday, he’s not...

Grandy Feelin’ Dandy

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 25th, 2010 | No Comments
According to reports on ESPN.com, Curtis Granderson is projected back in the Yankees line-up this Friday (5/28) as the Yankees start their three-game series against the Cleveland Indians in New York.  Granderson has been sidelined since May 1st, after pulling his groin going from first to third on a single. With the recent struggles endured by the Yankees (4-6 in last 10 games; 5.5 games behind the Rays) it’ll be good to get a bat with some pop back in their line-up.  Let’s hope Granderson can wipe away those early season spiderwebs, and start producing the way he is capable of...

School of the Hard Knocks – Report Card 3

Posted by Tom Ortiz in NY Yankees on 05 24th, 2010 | 6 Comments
New 3 Series Yankee Report Card. Last report grades are in gray for comparison. The School of the Hard Knocks: Every 3 series I will be grading (A+ – F) each active player on the Yankees Roster. The players grades will be determined based on their stats, their performance, any “extra” contributions they make during the 3 series, and well, my personal opinion. The report cards will be split between fielders and pitchers. Totals reflect the average. Grades are not cumulative. Honorable Mentions: Alex Rodriguez: Big home run to tie the game against Twins Marcus Thames: Big home run to win...

Yankees Not Making Any Moves… For Now

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 21st, 2010 | No Comments
According to a report on ESPN.com, the Yankees are not planning on changing their approach on the trade front despite the numerous injuries that have landed a few of the superstars on the disabled list. While it is not apparent that the most recent injury to Jorge Posada should have a long term affect on the veteran catcher, it is becoming more and more obvious that his body is unable to keep up with the day-in day-out grind of squatting behind the plate on a daily basis. While Posada is on the DL, this season has thus far proven that Francisco Cervelli can handle the starting spot, but the...

Pitching Matchups For The Subway Series

Posted by Colin MacNeil in MLB, NY Yankees on 05 21st, 2010 | No Comments
Well Yankee faithfuls, interleague play is about to begin tonight at Citi Field, with the crosstown rivals the New York Mets. If you are a Yankees fan or Mets fan, this weekend is shaping up to be a great series. With the pitching matchups set,  look for a low scoring series, but this is baseball after all  and it may look good on paper but anything can happen!!!! Tonight RHP Javier Vazquez (2-4, 8.01) vs. LHP Hisanori Takahashi (3-1, 3.12) Saturday RHP Phil Hughes (5-0, 2.25) vs. RHP Mike Pelfrey (5-1, 3.02) Sunday LHP CC Sabathia (4-2, 3.43) vs. LHP Johan Santana (3-2, 3.72) Here are...

Yankees Fans vs. Mets Fans

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 21st, 2010 | No Comments
The Wall Street Journal recently ran a survey that consisted of 650 males and females across all five New York City boroughs. Not surprisingly, the survey showed that sixty percent said that they followed the New York Yankees, while 33% said they follow the New York Mets. The article lists out many other surveys through what they are calling The Grand Fanalysis.  I am including a few of these findings below, but to see the rest of the results, check out the article on WSJ.com (Yankees Fans Are From Mars…) Fan Base The Mets have more fans in Queens, of course, and the Yankees have an ...

The School of Hard Knocks – Report Card 2

New 3 Series Yankee Report Card. Not looking as solid as last week, especially pitching, but there are some grade raises in the Fielder’s Report. Swisher Salutes (Week 6 – 5/10 to 5/16)

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 17th, 2010 | No Comments
Swisher Salutes you, Phil Hughes, for continuing to exceed expectations and show your true ace potential! You are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 6 of the 2010 season. So last week I said that award was the toughest to hand out so far, because so many players deserved it. This week was also difficult, but for a completely different reason. This was probably the Yankees’ worst week of the season, and no one really stood out. Well no one except one pitcher who is slowly turning into the star everyone in the Yankees’ farm system was raving about back in 2006 and...

Out with the Old, In with the New?

Posted by Tom Ortiz in NY Yankees on 05 11th, 2010 | 2 Comments
Well, it’s about that time we talk about the inevitable- the future of the Yankee’s starting catcher. After 15 dedicated, hard-working years, Jorge Posada has contributed to the Yankee’s defense and offense on a pretty consistent and generous level. As the years pass by, Jorge Posada is only getting older and older, and new, young, and hungry players, like Francisco Cervelli, begin biting at Posada’s ankles. Fortunately, for Posada, he can still call a pitch, manage pitchers, and hit with seniority. Unfortunately, so can Cervelli (and even quicker). Cervelli has...

Swisher Salutes (Week 5 – 5/3 to 5/9)

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 11th, 2010 | 1 Comment
Swisher Salutes…himself, Nick Swisher, for entertaining the bleacher creatures with so much more than his strapping personality! Jolly old St. Nick, you are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 5 of the 2010 season. This award was probably the toughest one to give out so far this season. While Mr. Cervelli spent the week causing Yankee fans to exclaim “Jorge who?”, Nick Swisher got his chance and immediately proved which Nick was better for the number 2 spot in the order. Swisher was moved up halfway through the week with the potentially long term injury to Nick...

It’s Going, Going, Gone…Gone…Gone!

Posted by Tom Ortiz in Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees on 05 10th, 2010 | 1 Comment
Mark Teixeira puts a dent in his April batting slump slamming 3 home runs  during a Saturday, May 8th game against the Boston Red Sox. Adding fuel to his May firestorm, Teixeira went 4-for-6 with 5 RBI’s. To top it all, he became the only Yankee to hit 3 home runs in a single game against the Bosox, since Lou Gehrig did over 80 years ago (June 23, 1927). Teixeira is batting nearly .400 since the beginning of May, completely dismissing his awful April BA of .136. Along with Cervelli’s consistent contribution, Yanks destroy Bosox 14-3. Happy Mothers Day to a Baseball Mom

Posted by Brian Capozzi in BronxBombersBeat.com News on 05 9th, 2010 | 1 Comment
It has been an absolute privilege writing about the New York Yankees on BronxBombersBeat.com for the past 3 months. As today, May 9th, is Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to thank all of the mother’s out there for all they have done for their families. If it weren’t for you all, this blog would not exist, and the game of baseball would not exist. With the sacrifices you have all made, we have been educated, nurtured, and cared for throughout all the great times in our lives, as well as the bad times. I would especially like to take this time to thank my mother for all...

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
