Swisher Salutes You, Robinson Cano, for carrying the offense on your back! You are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 4 of the 2010 season.
It seems almost criminal to not have given Robbie Cano this award earlier. Yesterday he was named the American League player of the month for April. With Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira combining for 4 homers in the entire month, one must start to wonder: Where would the Yankees be right now without Cano? Sure the starting pitching has been great, and Rivera is unhittable; but without a couple of clutch bats in the lineup, no team can be successful. Let’s just take a look at his numbers for the month of April.
Cano went 34 for 85, an even .400 average, with 5 doubles, 8 homers and 18 RBI. I can’t remember an April where one guy has carried so much of the team’s offense since Rodriguez went loopy in April of 2007, hitting 14 home runs in the team’s first 18 games, driving in 34 for the month, on his way to an MVP. Exciting, I know…but let’s get back to the task at hand: Player of the Week.
His stats read like this: he went 11 for 25 (.440/.481/1.000) last week with 2 doubles, 4 homers and 7 RBI. In the final game of the series at Camden Yards, he amassed 10 total bases (2 homers and a double in 4 AB). Simply put, he’s on fire. John Sterling’s “don’tcha know” call is starting to become a reflex. Yes Mr. Sterling – we know, it just took a little while. Barring injury or a horrific slump, Cano seems poised to record his first 30 homer season, something many people around baseball predicted would be in his future. Perhaps we’ll see the return of the O’Neill targets in the right field seats? Version 2010 and beyond: canO – Hit It Here!
