It has been an absolute privilege writing about the New York Yankees on BronxBombersBeat.com for the past 3 months. As today, May 9th, is Mother’s Day, I want to take a moment to thank all of the mother’s out there for all they have done for their families. If it weren’t for you all, this blog would not exist, and the game of baseball would not exist. With the sacrifices you have all made, we have been educated, nurtured, and cared for throughout all the great times in our lives, as well as the bad times.
I would especially like to take this time to thank my mother for all her hard work, dedication and caring throughout my life. Through the many highs of my life, to the many lows of my life, you have stood by my side and helped me persevere. We have had many memories throughout my life, however, I should point out that my most favorite memories ironically include the New York Yankees and the 15 years I spend playing competitive baseball. Now, I need to give props to my father for getting me into baseball in the first place as at first I really didn’t want to play. But at the age of six, after arguments and tears, I gathered up the courage to continue playing the sport I now love, and the ride has been absolutely incredible.
Mom, from the time I was 7, to the time I was 22, as the t-shirt reads, “Baseball is life, the rest is just details.” While playing in multiple leagues throughout the year (40-50 games), not only did you always help to ensure that I was prepared for the games, but most importantly, you were my biggest fan. You showed up at EVERY ONE OF MY GAMES! I can not recall a time when you did not show up. Whether the temperature was 100+ degrees in the dead of August, or we were playing a double header, you were always there to cheer me on, and I have always been thankful to you for being a fan. You were at all of my high school games, as well as all the college baseball games. Throughout the three shoulder surgeries I endured because of baseball, you were the greatest motivator. When I thought I had hit bottom, you were always there to help me overcome the obstacles. Thanks to that motivation, I am fortunate enough to continue playing the game I love today, even though it isn’t as competitive as it used to be.
We experienced the Yankees World Series parade down the Canyon of Heroes in 1996. We caught Yankees opening day in 1999 when they raised their 1998 World Series Championship flag, Yogi Berra was welcomed back to Yankee Stadium, and Bernie Williams hit a foul ball off of grandpas umbrella in the rain shortened Yankees victory. We have had countless conversations surrounding baseball, and most recently, we got to experience the Yankees clinch the AL East against the Boston Red Sox in the first year in the brand new ballpark in the Bronx. I can honestly say that I am extremely lucky to have a mother that is as much a fan of the Yankees and baseball as I am. I continue to look forward to watching the games with you on TV every chance we get. Thanks for being my mother and for being so awesome!
Happy Mother’s Day Mom… I love you!
