Swisher Salutes you, Brett Gardner, for stealing your way to…Brett? Brett! He’s gone! I swear he was just standing here. Anyway, Brett, you are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 9 of the 2010 season.
Although the sample size was a bit low, Gardner was easily the most productive hitter in the Yankees lineup for the home series with the O’s and the weekend series in Toronto. He only played 4 of the 6 games, but in those 4 games he collected 6 hits in 13 at bats, including 2 doubles, a triple, and his third homer of the season. Add in 3 walks, 5 runs scored, 4 RBIs and 2 stolen bases, and this was quite the week. His overall line for the week was (.462/.563/1.000). Yes, that’s right, Brett Gardner slugged 1.000!
Gardner has slipped under the radar this season, but he’s hitting over .300. He’s been better than anyone could have expected. The most amazing thing is that he’s actually leading the team in runs scored, while hitting mostly out of the 9 spot in the order. He’s been getting on base consistently, at almost a .400 clip, and once he’s on base he may be the most dangerous baserunner in the league. He’s also hit two 400 foot home runs this year – a feat I’m sure no one saw coming when he broke into the league a few years ago. Gardner is in the midst of a career year, and definitely showing he belongs as an everyday player in this league.
Honorable Mention:
Javy Vazquez (2-0, 1.93 ERA in 2 starts – 14 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 14 K)

| Nick Swisher | 1 | Week 5 |
