Swisher Salutes (Week 11 – 6/14 to 6/20)

Swisher Salutes you, C.C. Sabathia, for taking back the ace spot in the rotation. The big man is coming up big in the summer months. C.C., you are the BronxBombersBeat Yankees Player of the Week for Week 11 of the 2010 season.

Let me start by apologizing to any readers for the lack of Swisher Salutes articles. I’d like to think it was because Swish was too busy tearin’ up the American League – but really it had more to do with my inability to sit down and start writing. However, C.C. has started winning, and the league is once again taking notice. The same goes for this site.

I won’t claim to be any expert on horses, but I know one when I see one. C.C. Sabathia is 100% horse – only this horse’s diet consists of innings…and a lot of them. In week 11, Sabathia made 2 starts, pitching 7 innings in the first and 8 in the second. Throw in the 2 starts after week 11, (this post is being written in the future, so we can do that sort of thing) and C.C. has gone at least 7 innings in all 6 of his starts since June 1st.

He’s also won all 6 of those starts, moving to 10-3 on the season, and lowering his era from 4.16 to 3.33. The big 3 of the rotation this year, Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, and the somewhat surprising Phil Hughes, are a combined 30-7 with a 3.31 era.

Sabathia’s stats for the week: 2-0 with a 1.80 era in 2 starts. He went 15 innings, gave up 9 hits and 3 earned runs, with 5 walks and 13 strikeouts. The fact that he’s 10-3 at the season midway point makes it almost seem probable that he’ll get to 20 wins this year. While Pettitte may slow down a bit in the second half, and Hughes’ innings limit will most definitely curb his win total, C.C. has always been his strongest in the season’s second half, and he could have as many as 12 wins by the all-star break.

Standings:

Phil Hughes 2 Weeks 3, 6
Robinson Cano 2 Weeks 4, 8
Curtis Granderson 1 Week 1
Derek Jeter 1 Week 2
Nick Swisher 1 Week 5
Javy Vazquez 1 Week 7
Brett Gardner 1 Week 9
Mariano Rivera 1 Week 10
C.C. Sabathia 1 Week 11

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
