Class A Charleston River Dogs hurler Brett Marshall tossed a one-hitter against the Savannah Sand Gnats in a rain-shortened 8-0 victory. Marshall, a sixth-round pick in the 2008 Draft, was 3-6 with a 5.56 ERA in 17 games last season before undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery. He returned to the mound this summer at the Yankees’ Spring Training complex in Tampa, Fla., where coaches eventually allowed him to finally use his signature pitch again, the sinking two-seam fastball.
While relying mainly on his two-seamer, Marshall took a perfect game into the 6th inning. Marshall retired the first 16 batters before allowing a one-out double in the sixth to Nick Santomauro. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 2.63 in his fourth win.
After the game, Brett Marshall was quoted as saying:
I felt comfortable, I got into a groove and was going out there and pitching well. I was throwing good pitches and letting my defense work. I wasn’t trying to overpower them, I just wanted to throw strikes and keep the ball down.
While Marshall is still young and has a way to go before reaching Yankees, it’s always refreshing to know that there is a young gun in the farm system who is performing at such a high level. Who knows… maybe we’ll see him on the mound in the Bronx sooner rather than later. Only time will tell.
