According to a report on ESPN.com Insider’s Rumor Central, Yankees starter Andy Pettitte is scheduled to throw a 20-25 pitch throwing session in Chicago later today. The results of this session could have a notable impact on the starting rotation as the team approaches a critical September stretch which will see the Yankees face the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox a combined 13 times (7 vs. Rays – 6 vs. Red Sox). They also face the Toronto Blue Jays six more times… a team the Yankees have struggled against all season.
Pettitte has been on the disabled list since July 19 with a strained left groin. Unfortunately the injury has taken longer to heal than expected for both the Yankees and Pettitte. Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News writes that if things go well, it would put Pettitte on course for a mid-September return, giving him about three weeks to get himself ready for the postseason. At the time of his injury, Pettitte was enjoying the best start of his 16-year career with an 11-2 record and 2.88 ERA. Moseley has taken Pettitte’s spot in the rotation. Hughes’ recent struggles make the return of Pettitte, who owns an 18-9 postseason record, even more pivotal.
