Robinson Cano Wins Home Run Derby

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB, NY Yankees on 07 12th, 2011 | No Comments
For the first time in 9 years, a New York Yankee has won the Home Run Derby. This wasn’t just any win… it came in the midst of an epic slugfest with Red Sox home run leader Adrian Gonzalez. With his father pitching to him for all three rounds, Robinson Cano blasted 8 home runs in round giving him enough home runs to advance to round two. Gonzalez might have hit 9 home runs in round 1, but Cano hit 12 bombs in the 2nd round to tie Gonzalez for the top 2 spots… each with 20 homers apiece. This typical Yankees-Red Sox rivalry was going down to the wire. In Gonzalez 3rd round,...

What’s Brewin’ in Sports Releases All-Star Ballot…

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB on 06 27th, 2011 | No Comments
Via George Brew of WhatsBrewinInSports.com… The fan voting for the All Star Game has annoyed me for years and this year I decided to fill out my own ballot and tell you why I chose each player American League: Catcher: Russell Martin – The first year New York Yankee backstop have rejuvenized Yankee fans thought of what a Catcher should do, his .230 batting average isn’t the greatest among AL Catchers but his 9 HR’s and 30 RBI’s and 7 SB give him the check mark from me over Toronto’s J.P. Arencibia and Detroit’s Alex Avila. First Base: Adrian Gonzalez – This one...

Review: 61* on Blu-Ray

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 06 27th, 2011 | 1 Comment
HBO recently gave me an incredible opportunity to review the Billy Crystal directed baseball movie 61* which was released on HBO in 2001. If you have not had the chance to see this movie yet, I need to ask you, what are you waiting for? From one diehard Yankee fan to another, this is by far my favorite baseball movie. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were in a heated race throughout the entire 1961 season while chasing the home run record of 60 set by Babe Ruth in 1927. Thomas Jane plays Mickey Mantle and does a phenomenal job playing my favorite Yankee. From the late night drinking in New York...

Do The Yankees Need Derek Jeter To Win?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 06 16th, 2011 | 4 Comments
If the stats this season say anything about whether or not the Yankees NEED to have Captain Jeter in the line-up in order to win, the answer is they do not. Even though Jeter has missed only 4 games through June 15th, in those games, the Yankees are 3-1, while averaging 9.75 runs per game. They have outscored their opponents 39-17 and I should add that those opponents are legit teams as well: Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, and Chicago White Sox. Could it be possible that Jeter’s inability to hit in the clutch, and the numerous double plays he has hit into be the reason why the Yankees...

Finally! The Offense Explodes!

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 06 11th, 2011 | No Comments
While one win doesn’t exactly take away the sour taste left in our mouths after the Yankees-Red Sox series, an offense blowout can definitely help. Backed by a solid outing from Ivan Nova, the Yankees beat the Indians last evening in the Bronx by a score of 11-7. A 4-run 9th inning by the Indians is the reason why the score seems closer then it was. In the bottom of the 1st inning, patience… that’s right, patience is what led the Yankees to a 3-0 lead. Jeter led off the game with a walk, followed by a Granderson strikeout, and 2 walks to Teixeira and A-Rod. Cano stepped to...

Yankees Embarrass Themselves After Being Swept by the Red Sox Again!

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees on 06 10th, 2011 | 1 Comment
Since getting swept by the Red Sox for the second time in a month isn’t bad enough, the Yankees managed to get swept in a very embarrassing way. Please know that I am never going to count the Yankees out, especially over a bad 3-game stretch, but seriously, heads need to roll with how sluggish and pathetic the team played. While I am very upset with the team getting swept, the thing that is bothering me even more is the way the Yankees managed to lose. The pitching was awful throughout the series, Cervelli was awful behind the plate in the two games he was back there by making 3...

It’s Deja Vu All Over Again – Yankees Can’t Finish the Comeback

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees on 06 9th, 2011 | No Comments
I have absolutely no idea where to begin except to express my frustration with how the Yankees have been playing in the series against the Red Sox. Apparently the Yankees starters enjoy digging the team into a massive hole before the offense even gets a chance to strike first.  Yesterday it was A.J. Burnett, the day before that it was Freddy Garcia. By the time the 3rd out in the top of the 1st inning came, the Red Sox took a 3-0 lead courtesy of an Adrian Gonzalez RBI and yet another David Ortiz 2-run bomb. A 4th run was added by the Sox in the top of the second inning, and by the time the...

Yankees Can’t Finish the Comeback

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees on 06 8th, 2011 | 4 Comments
Sorry folks for my lack of contributions lately as I have been extremely busy with work, traveling, and the arrival of the newest addition to the family, my nephew Andrew Robert! Welcome to the world buddy… you will be rooting for the Yankees before you know it, I’ll make sure you do! As if the 3-game sweep in early May wasn’t enough for the Boston Red Sox, they decided that the first inning, of the first game in June would be a good way to continue. After plating 3-runs in the top of the 1st inning, Freddy Garcia and the Yankees found themselves in an early hole. The Yanks...

Yankees win 4-1 in 15, Pitching was the Real Winner

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Baltimore Orioles, NY Yankees on 05 19th, 2011 | 1 Comment
If the Yankees pitching staff was not as solid as they were Wednesday evening, the Yankees would not have had the opportunity to win the game last night. The offense and defense for the Yankees have been beyond awful, and the fact that Bartolo Colon, Mariano Rivera, Luis Ayala, Boone Logan, and Hector Noesi allowed only 1-run through 15 innings of baseball is nothing shrot of amazing. Boone Logan got the Yankees out of a critical jam in the 11th inning, and Hector Noesi threw 4 shutout inning. Granted Mariano blew the save in the bottom of the 9th, the offense had PLENTY of opporunities...

Probable Pitching Matchups – Yankees vs. Rangers

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB, NY Yankees on 05 6th, 2011 | No Comments
The New York Yankees (17-12) are little more than halfway through a 7-game roadtrip, where the Bombers took lost 3 of the 4 games played against the Tigers in Detroit. The Yankees look to end the road trip on a high note against the Texas Rangers. If you recall earlier this season, the Yankees won the 3-game series against the Rangers in the Bronx from May 15-17. photo © 2009 Rough Tough, Real Stuff | more info (via: Wylio) The defending American League Champion Texas Rangers (17-15) have lost 7 of their last 10, and find themselves entering the 3-game series against the Yankees in second...

Errors and Lack of Offense Cost Yankees Series

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 05 6th, 2011 | No Comments
Despite a very solid outing by Yankees starter A.J. Burnett yesterday; an offense that has been non-existent over the past few games; mental lapses on the base paths; and three costly errors, the Yankees lost their 3rd game in a row against the Tigers by a score of 6-3… the teams first 3 game losing streak of the season. We can all sit here and point fingers at Eduardo Nunez, but the fact of the matter is that the Yankees offense has looked as dead as Phil Hughes’ arm. Not to poke fun at the Yankees starter, but the Yankees struggles at the plate go further than just the lack of...

Eric Chavez Breaks Bone In Foot

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Injuries, NY Yankees on 05 5th, 2011 | No Comments
Eric Chavez has been such a great addition to the Yankees as a utility guy off the bench, but as history has shown baseball fans, Chavez is extremely fragile. He has had his share of injuries throughout his career. It took until the 29th game of the season of the 2011 season for him to injure himself. While legging out a triple in today’s game against the Tigers in Detroit, Eric Chavez fractured the 5th metatarsal in his left foot after rounding 2nd base. According to CBSSports.com: Late in the game, the Yankees told reporter and the TV broadcast that Chavez had a small fracture in ...

Phil Hughes Has Bad Bullpen Session

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 25th, 2011 | 3 Comments
Breaking news from the world of Twitter… @JackCurryYES has announced that Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes threw a 20 pitch bullpen session and it did not go well. Next on the the list for Phil Hughes is a visit with team doctors. See posts below from Jack Curry’s twitter feed. More on this to come as it unfolds, but at this point, things are not looking good for Phil Hughes at this point.  What are your thoughts on the current situation. Fortunately Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia are pulling their weight right now. Let’s hope there is no serious damage to his arm,...

AL East is Getting Back to Normal

Posted by Brian Capozzi in AL East News, NY Yankees on 04 25th, 2011 | 4 Comments
For those of you out there who really thought that the Red Sox would spend the entire season in the cellar, shame on you. Obviously all Yankees fans want the Red Sox to fail, but you have to give credit where credit is due, and that team is far too good to remain in the cellar. After spending a little more than half the first month in last place in the AL East, the Red Sox are slowly climbing the standings and currently find themselves in 3rd place in the AL East with a record of 10-11 as of April 25, 2011. The same can be said about the Tampa Bay Rays. With Longoria on the disabled list,...

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
