Yanks Win in Walk-Off Fashion, Hughes Still Struggling

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Baltimore Orioles, NY Yankees on 04 15th, 2011 | 1 Comment
From his first start of the season, it has been very painful watching Phil Hughes stand on the rubber, 60′ 6″ away from home plate. His fastball has been sub-par, and he has not had any command whatsoever in any of three starts. In my mind, he has been atrocious. The only highlight from Hughes last night was that he hit 92 MPH one time last night, while still only averaging 89 MPH for the entire 4 1/3 innings. Truthfully, the Yankees are lucky to have been able to pull off the victory last night. Thanks in part to an amazing offense (which included Derek Jeter), the Yankees were...

Abused! The Pedro Feliciano Story

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 13th, 2011 | 1 Comment
As if Pedro Feliciano hasn’t been through enough since signing a two-year, $8 million contract with the Yankees, he is experiencing yet another setback from his work to join the Yankees. While playing catch on Tuesday for the first time since March 27, he felt the same discomfort in his left rotator cuff that he felt during spring training. He is scheduled for an MRI at spome point today. Pedro Feliciano was quoted: It’s not really pain, it’s just like a pinch when I throw. That’s the only thing. No pain at all. I don’t feel bad, it’s just that the doctor...

Manhattan Mini Storage mocks the Mets

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB on 04 7th, 2011 | 1 Comment
Pictures have been circulating around the internet since yesterday that show one of the most recent advertising efforts by Manhattan Mini Storage. As if the Bernie Madoff hasn’t caused enough drama and frustration within the Mets universe, Manhattan Mini Storage is getting in on the action. Advertisements around New York City are asking New Yorkers why they are leaving the city when there are 6 professional sports team… AND the Mets. Not gonna lie… I think this is hysterical. I know many people out there are calling it insensitive and not funny, but come on, you gotta...

Rafael Soriano is playing with fire

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 6th, 2011 | No Comments
Less then a week into the season, and drama has found it way into the Yankees clubhouse thanks in part to Rafael Soriano. After the disappointing loss last evening, reporters made their way into the clubhouse to find that Soriano decided that he didn’t want to address the media and left the stadium. This is a huge no-no, especially for a clubhouse where each player is responsible for addressing the media… not relying on teammates to do it for you. Can you imagine what would happen if Derek Jeter bailed on reporters after a game? We probably wouldn’t have heard from him...

What Were You Thinking Girardi?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 6th, 2011 | 1 Comment
Let me first make it clear by saying that I am not upset at all that the Yankees lost last night by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings. Was it rough to watch? Absolutely! Should the Yankees have won the game? Absolutely! Did they win? No. I can sit here and say that Yankees skipper Joe Girardi is crazy and should’ve left C.C. Sabathia in when the Yankees took the field in the top of the 8th since he was mowing down Twins, and pitching a fantastic game, but Girardi made the right move in going to the bullpen… my problem is with who came out of the bullpen. The fact is, yesterday was the...

A Grand Win for the Yankees

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 04 1st, 2011 | No Comments
If there was any doubt as to whether or not Curtis Granderson was ready for Opening Day, they can be erased now. In the words of John Sterling, “Oh Curtis, you’re something sort of grandish. The grandy man can, the grandy man can”. With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Granderson stepped up to plate against former Yankee reliever Phil Coke, a lefty nonetheless. If history tells us anything, this should’ve been a sure out. Granderson vs. a lefty… no brainer. Lefty wins 9 times out of 10. Not this time! Thanks to the dedication of Kevin Long, I...

Opening Day Quotes

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 03 31st, 2011 | No Comments
The little kid in me is 100% out today… I am literally counting down the minutes and seconds until first pitch at Yankee Stadium, which is currently at 3 hours, 45 minutes, 9 seconds. While reading an article about Opening Day on MLB.com, I came across an amazing quote from Joe DiMaggio on what he thinks about the first game of the regular season (which can be seen below). That inspired me to find other quotes about Opening Day, not just from the Yankees, but from all of Major League Baseball, as fans all over the country are feeling the same way I am right now! “You look forward...

UPDATE: Opening Day is Finally Here

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB, NY Yankees on 03 31st, 2011 | 2 Comments
UPDATE (2:27pm): The Yankees took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a 3-run home run by Mark Teixeira. In the top of the 4th, an RBI single by Brandon Inge, the Tigers shrunk the lead to 3-2. UPDATE (1:54pm): At the end of the 2nd inning, the Tigers are leading the Yankees by a score of 1-0 on a sacrifice fly by Jhonny Peralta. UPDATE (1:18pm): Sabathia shuts down the Tigers 1-2-3 with the help of Curtis Granderson in center, and 1 strikeout. UPDATE (12:45pm): @YankeesPR is reporting that the tarp is off the field, and the grounds crew is getting the field ready for some...

I Can Smell Yankees Baseball in the Air

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 03 24th, 2011 | No Comments
As the New York City area defrosts from the unexpected snow we received last evening, I can’t help but find myself antsy for next Thursday to arrive. The sun is setting later, warmer temperatures are on the way, and the 162-game season is about to begin. The Yankees will be taking on the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx at 1pm on Thursday afternoon. While it hasn’t been announced, I am almost certain that the starting pitchers for game 1 will feature C.C. Sabathia (2010: 21-7, 3.18 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (2010: 18-9, 3.37 ERA). Runs will be hard to come by against...

Ichiro Suzuki: A Role Model For All

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB on 03 18th, 2011 | No Comments
photo © 2009 Keith Allison | more info (via: Wylio)Whether you are a child playing baseball on the streets of your hometown, or a multi-million dollar professional athlete, everyone should take a notes on Ichiro Suzuki. I have been a fan of Ichiro since he came over from Japan in 2001; however, after reading an article in USA Today, I have a new found respect for him. While not speaking publicly about the devastation in Japan over the last week, The Seattle Times reported that Ichiro donated 100 million yen ($1.25 million) to the Red Cross Relief Effort. You have to respect someone...

Joe Torre Accepts Old Timers Day Invitation

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 03 18th, 2011 | No Comments
photo © 2007 Keith Allison | more info (via: Wylio)Now that he has stepped away from managerial duties for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and has stepped into an executive position with Major League Baseball in New York City, what better way to welcome back ‘Clueless Joe’ to the Big Apple by inviting him to take part in Old Timers Day. ESPN.com is reporting that Joe Torre has accepted the invitation from the Yankees family, and will be taking part in Old Timers Day festivities on June 26, 2011. Every Yankee fan out there knows how difficult it was for Torre to turn down the Yankees...

Sorry New York, you selected the wrong all-time greatest athlete

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees on 03 17th, 2011 | No Comments
The New York Daily News published an article on Wednesday, March 16th sharing the results of a Siena College Research Institute poll on which player is New York’s all-time greatest athlete. Out of the 801 New York State residents who were polled, 14 percent selected Derek Sanderson Jeter as New York’s all-time greatest athlete. For those of you who know me, normally I would not be one to disagree as I am a huge Jeter fan, but come on now. While Jeter is the current face of the franchise and brought 5 World Series championships throughout his career, and has had a Hall of Fame...

Dear Cliff Lee, Yankees Fans Don’t Care Anymore

Posted by Brian Capozzi in MLB, NY Yankees on 03 17th, 2011 | 3 Comments
For those of you who have not heard, Cliff Lee went on a radio show a few days ago, and when he was asked about which team finished second to the Phillies, he responded with the following quote: Texas probably finished second to be honest with you. Just as far as the quality of the team and the chance to win a World Series ring, I think they’re a better team. That’s just my opinion. The Yankees can do anything at any moment to improve and they’re not afraid to go do things. That was part of the decision making process too, but I felt like with what the Red Sox had done and it...

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
