Posted by Tom Ortiz in AL East News, BronxBombersBeat.com News, NY Yankees on 05 3rd, 2011 | 2 Comments
April Yankee Report Card. The School of the Hard Knocks: Every month I will be grading (A+ – F) each active player on the Yankees Roster. The players grades will be determined based on their stats, their performance, any “extra” contributions they make during the month, and well, my personal opinion. The report cards will be split between fielders and pitchers. Totals reflect the average. ______________________________________________________ Honorable Mentions: Robinson Cano: Bronx Bomber Award (Leading in Batting AVG, HRs, RBIs, and Total Hits). Bartolo Colon/Freddy Garcia: Stepping...

Tonight’s Lineup – White Sox vs Yankees (04/25/11)

Posted by Colin MacNeil in AL East News, MLB, NY Yankees on 04 25th, 2011 | 1 Comment
The New York Yankees (12-6) are set to take on the slumping Chicago White Sox (8-14) for a four-game series at the Cathedral in the Bronx. The Yankees took four of six from the White Sox last season, including two of three at Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers offense has been rolling – it pounded out 15 runs on Saturday against the Orioles and entered Sunday leading the Majors in homers (36) and multihomer games (10).  On the mound tonight for the Yankees is, Allan James Burnett (3-0, 4.37). Burnett got a no decision his last outing against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays ended up...

AL East is Getting Back to Normal

Posted by Brian Capozzi in AL East News, NY Yankees on 04 25th, 2011 | 4 Comments
For those of you out there who really thought that the Red Sox would spend the entire season in the cellar, shame on you. Obviously all Yankees fans want the Red Sox to fail, but you have to give credit where credit is due, and that team is far too good to remain in the cellar. After spending a little more than half the first month in last place in the AL East, the Red Sox are slowly climbing the standings and currently find themselves in 3rd place in the AL East with a record of 10-11 as of April 25, 2011. The same can be said about the Tampa Bay Rays. With Longoria on the disabled list,...

Pitching Matchups – Yankees vs Orioles

Posted by Colin MacNeil in Baltimore Orioles, NY Yankees on 04 22nd, 2011 | No Comments
After having an off day on Thursday, the New York Yankees(10-6) are set for a three-game series this weekend with the Baltimore Orioles(8-10). The last time these two teams met, was back in the Bronx for a shorten-two game series, due too the first game being postponed. Bomber fans will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hold a piece of history during their visit to Baltimore. Throughout the weekend, Babe Ruth’s 1927 record-setting homerun bat will be on display at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum. This bat is kept in the archives and is not usually on public display. Tonight’s Lineup – Yankees vs Blue Jays (04/20/11)

Posted by Colin MacNeil in NY Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays on 04 20th, 2011 | No Comments
Alex Rodriguez is back in the lineup and playing third. A-Rod took himself out of the game Saturday afternoon with lower back/oblique tightness. Brett Gardner gets the night-off and Andruw Jones will be playing left. On the mound tonight for the Bombers is Bartolo Colon (0-1, 3.97). This will be Colon’s first start as a Yankee and his first since July, 2009. This season, Bartolo has been coming out of the bullpen as the Yankees’ long reliever. Bartolo Colon is taking over Phil Hughes spot in the rotation, who’s on the disable list. After tonight’s game the New York...

Tonight’s Lineup – Yankees vs Blue Jays (04/19/11)

Posted by Colin MacNeil in NY Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays on 04 19th, 2011 | 1 Comment
The New York Yankees(9-5) are in Toronto to take Blue Jays(7-9) for the first time this season. In 2010, the Yankees went 8-10 against the Blue Jays — the first time they lost the season series since 2000 — and dropped six of nine in Toronto. Don’t look now but Alex Rodriguez is not in tonight’s lineup. Joe Girardi did say that they (Yankees) are going to take the A-Rod injury, day-by-day. Rodriguez did have a precautionary MRI exam, which did comeback clean. New York Yankees: (9-5) 1. Derek Jeter SS 2. Curtis Granderson CF 3. Mark Teixeira 1B 4. Robinson Cano 2B 5....

Pitching Matchups – Yankees vs Blue Jays

Posted by Colin MacNeil in NY Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays on 04 19th, 2011 | 2 Comments
The New York Yankees(9-5) are in Toronto to take on the Blue Jays(7-9) in a rare two-game series. The Yankees are coming off a series win against the Texas Rangers, where they took two-out-of-three and the Blue Jays lost the last three games to the struggling Red Sox. On the mound tonight for the Bombers is A.J. Burnett who will be looking for his fourth straight victory. Bartolo Colon will be making his first start in a Yankees uniform Wednesday night. Colon, who’s filling the rotation spot of Phil Hughes (right shoulder inflammation). Tonight RHP A.J. Burnett (3-0, 4.67) vs. RHP Kyle...

Yanks Win in Walk-Off Fashion, Hughes Still Struggling

Posted by Brian Capozzi in Baltimore Orioles, NY Yankees on 04 15th, 2011 | 1 Comment
From his first start of the season, it has been very painful watching Phil Hughes stand on the rubber, 60′ 6″ away from home plate. His fastball has been sub-par, and he has not had any command whatsoever in any of three starts. In my mind, he has been atrocious. The only highlight from Hughes last night was that he hit 92 MPH one time last night, while still only averaging 89 MPH for the entire 4 1/3 innings. Truthfully, the Yankees are lucky to have been able to pull off the victory last night. Thanks in part to an amazing offense (which included Derek Jeter), the Yankees were...

Red Sox Are Out of the Postseason Race

Posted by Brian Capozzi in AL East News, Boston Red Sox, NY Yankees on 09 16th, 2010 | No Comments
Well… mathematically, they are not, but they have a huge mountain to climb to make the postseason. For all Yankees fans out there, the idea of NOT seeing the hated Red Sox in the postseason is reassuring, and actually quite enjoyable. With the Yankees and Red Sox each having 16 games left on the season, the likelihood of them overtaking the Yankees (who are currently sitting in second place) is very slim. The Yankees are 88-58 while the Red Sox are 82-64. The two team will meet 6 more times this season, 3 times at Fenway, and 3 times at the cathedral in the Bronx. Despite the Yankees...

Could Jose Bautista Become A Yankee?

Posted by Brian Capozzi in AL East News, NY Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays on 07 8th, 2010 | 1 Comment
There is no evidence of that yet, but Buster Olney of ESPN believes it would be a good move! According to a report on ESPN Insider’s MLB Rumor Central, Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista has been placed on the trading block. Being that the Jays are no longer in contention within the AL East, Toronto might become the most aggressive sellers at the trade deadline. The team lead all of baseball in home runs, yet they are just a notch above the Pirates and Astros for worst team batting average. It will be interesting to see who the Blue Jays deal as the month of July continues...

Series Recap: Toronto Blue Jays vs. Yankees

Posted by Brian Capozzi in NY Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays on 07 5th, 2010 | No Comments
On Friday, the Yankees began a 3-game homestand against one of their AL-East rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays. The game was a nail-biter until the top of the 11th inning. Until that point, the score was tied. The Blue Jays exploded in the 11th for 5-runs off a very shaky Yankee bullpen to cap off a 6-1 comeback win. A.J. Burnett looked extremely strong in his first start since the return of Dave Eiland. Jason Frasor got the win the the Blue Jays, while David Robertson got the loss for the Yankees. On Saturday afternoon the Yankees found themselves down 2-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd...

Baltimore Orioles Contact Former Yankees Skipper

Posted by Brian Capozzi in AL East News, Baltimore Orioles on 06 17th, 2010 | No Comments
ESPN.com Insider’s Rumor Central is reporting that former Yankees manager Buck Showalter has been contacted by the Baltimore Orioles about their open managerial position. For those of you who are too young to remember who Buck Showalter was, he managed the Yankees from 1992-1995, compiling an overall record of 313-268 leading the team to a first place finish in the strike-shortened 1994 season, as well as a 2nd place in 1995 (the first ever wild card) only to lose to the Seattle Mariners in five games. After his time with the Yankees, he spent 3 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks...

YANKEE FACT

06/10/2011 - On May 8, 1925, the Yankees Everett Scott sat out a game against the St. Louis Brown, ending his Major League record of 1,307 consecutive games played. Just three weeks later, Scott's teammate Lou Gehrig began a streak of 2,130 straight games that would break Scott's record and stand for decades.
